There is an 8350C with a 1/2 spool (little brother to the 8450C) presently going for $1800. I think the 8450C is the best reel for 6 weights and above. For 6 weights and below my pick is the San Miguels.

For anything in saltwater I think I'd choose the 8500. Especially if using bamboo then the extra weight of the 8500 is not as much of an issue.
