What is confusing is the statement in the owner's manual about replacement intervals; the statement actually only applies to 4-cyl cars. Even though the filter is mounted in the tank, this is still a replaceable element on 4-cyl, but not on 6-cyl. This setup isn't peculiar to Subaru -- most all OEs are doing that nowadays -- fuel pump + fuel filter + pressure regulator = single unit.
