WebThe route climbs steeply up past Field Hut (2-3 hours from the road end), one of the oldest huts in the Tararuas and pops out of the bush line giving you incredible views for the last few hours. Kime Hut was rebuilt in 2014 and is much larger and warmer than the old hut. I’ve stayed in it several times on overnight and 3-4 day tramps. WebThe kids loved the scrambly travel and vistas. We got the lot – Kaikouras, Marlborough Sounds, Mt Taranaki, Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe and the intricate puzzle of Tararua ridges, peaks and valleys. We were at Tarn Ridge Hut in time for a sunny afternoon on the deck – enjoying the view of the upper Waingawa and next summer’s Bannister crossing.
